BURKINA FASO: Village Attacked Second Time

In April 2020, 13 churches in southern Burkina Faso were attacked and severely damaged or destroyed by followers of traditional religions. Many of the communities, including the village of Obire, have been planning to rebuild. On 27 February 2023, armed bandits attacked Obire again, killing three people. Christians in Obire believe the second group of attackers were militant Fulani Muslims. Armed Muslim extremists have been crossing into Burkina Faso from neighbouring countries with increasing regularity to attack Christians they see as threats to their goal of establishing a purely Islamic region.
