Liya was eight months pregnant when her husband was killed by rioting Muslims in 2020. When riots broke out against Christians in central Ethiopia, Liya’s husband rushed home from his job in another city. While he traveled, the attackers found him and killed him. During the attack, radicalised Muslims looted and burned Christian homes, sparing properties owned by Muslims. After the attack, Liya moved in with her mother, who is also a poor widow, and her son was born shortly after.
