HAITI: Christians Targeted in Massacre, at Least 47 People Killed, Church Burned

At least 47 people, many of them Christians, were killed during a major gang attack in Haiti’s Kenscoff commune on 23 and 24 August. At least five of those killed were children. More than 50 others were kidnapped, and a gang leader reportedly threatened to kill the hostages if authorities harmed any gang members.

Beginning at about 10.30pm and continuing into the following morning, members of the Viv Ansanm gang terrorised the community, kidnapping residents and setting fire to at least 25 homes and livestock. Their main target was the Ark of the New Testament Evangelical Church, where families displaced by violence in Port-au-Prince had sought shelter. According to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, 22 people were reportedly executed inside the church compound.

The attack is believed to be one of Haiti’s largest mass killings and kidnappings in recent years. Gangs now control an estimated 70 to 90% of Port-au-Prince and are increasingly extending their influence into surrounding agricultural communities. More than 18 000 residents have reportedly been displaced by the continuing violence.

Despite the escalating danger, Haitian Christians continue serving their communities and offering hope to those who are suffering. As Archbishop Max Leroy Mésidor of Port-au-Prince declared, “The church has to continue its mission in good times and bad.”

• Pray for wisdom, courage and integrity for Haiti’s leaders and security authorities. Ask God to frustrate the plans of those intent on evil.

• Pray that Haitian Believers will stand firm in faith and remain courageous witnesses to Christ’s hope. Ask God to use this tragic event as an opportunity for spiritual awakening.
